💡 Which height should I choose? The 4″ tall strip works beautifully on standard 2-layer cakes (typically 4–5″ tall), giving full side coverage and maximum frame space for your photos. The 2.5″ strip creates a sleek decorative band — great for shorter cakes, dummy tiers, or when you want a film strip accent rather than full coverage.
🧮 How Many Strips Do You Need?
Each strip is 10 inches long. Use these quick formulas to figure out how many strips you need to wrap your entire cake, then add a little extra for the thickness of the frosting.
🔵 Round Cake
Diameter × 3.14 = Circumference
Example: A 6″ round cake → 6 × 3.14 = ~19 inches. You'll need 2 strips at 10″ each with slight overlap.
⬛ Square or Rectangle Cake
Side 1 + Side 2 + Side 3 + Side 4 = Total
Example: An 8″ square cake → 8+8+8+8 = 32 inches. You'll need about 4 strips at 10″ each.
⚠️ Always order a little extra. Frosting adds thickness to your cake beyond the pan size. We recommend ordering at least 1 extra strip as a buffer — and to have a backup in case of application errors. The film reel design also looks stunning when strips are slightly overlapped, creating a continuous reel effect all the way around the cake.
📸 Photo Tips for the Best Film Reel Effect
Portrait-oriented photos (taller than wide) tend to look best inside film reel frames, as they fill the frame panels more naturally. Landscape photos also work — our team will position them to fit the frames as well as possible.
For Black & White prints, photos with strong contrast between light and dark areas produce the most dramatic, cinematic effect. Avoid flat, low-contrast images.
For Full Color prints, well-lit, vibrant photos with a clear subject look best. Avoid dark, heavily filtered, or blurry images.
Send photos as JPEG or PNG files — not as screenshots, links, or Google Drive shares. Attach them directly to the reply email.
If you are ordering multiple strips and want different photos on each, send all your images labeled clearly (e.g., "Strip 1 – graduation photo," "Strip 2 – family photo").
If you want the same photo repeated in every frame across all strips, just send one image and let us know.
Minimum recommended resolution: 300 DPI or at least 1000px on the shortest side. The larger and clearer the file, the better the print quality.
✨ Application Tips for Best Results
Apply to a freshly iced, chilled cake with a smooth layer of buttercream or fondant. The strip adheres best to a slightly tacky surface — not a fully crusted one.
Peel the backing carefully and press the strip gently from one end to the other in a smooth, steady motion to avoid creasing the film frame design.
For a continuous film reel effect around the whole cake, slightly overlap the ends of adjacent strips by about ¼ inch where they meet. This also hides any seam.
If your buttercream is fully crusted or your cake is fondant-covered, lightly brush a thin layer of piping gel or water on the surface before applying.
Do not apply to a sweating or condensation-covered cake — moisture can cause the strip to shift or the colors to bleed slightly. Let the surface dry before applying.
Once applied, gently smooth the strip with the back of a clean spoon or offset spatula to remove any air bubbles and ensure even contact.
Strips can be applied up to 24–48 hours before your event and stored loosely covered in the refrigerator without losing quality.

Each 10-inch strip contains several individual film frame panels depending on the height. You can send multiple photos and we'll arrange them across the frames, or you can send one photo to be repeated. Since each strip is 10 inches long, you'd need approximately 3 strips to wrap the full cake with a slight overlap at the seams.
